Events for foreigners to experience and engage with the community  – NPO Nishitokyo Multicultural and International Center

Events for foreigners to experience and engage with the community

What is this activity?

Primarily targeting foreign residents, students, and workers in Nishitokyo City, we host enjoyable events several times a year to introduce local culture, lifestyle, traditions, history, and so on while promoting interaction with local residents and among foreigners themselves.
Rather than considering it as hospitality or hosting guests, we focus on exchange as neighbors living together in the same community.

Events are typically planned and executed on weekends and public holidays to ensure that those who have difficulty participating on weekdays can join.

Past activities

“Experiencing a Traditional Japanese New Year” Held in January.

After tasting various flavors of mochi (rice cakes), such as ozoni soup and kinako mochi, participants, while chatting, enjoy traditional New Year games, such as Bozu-mekuri and Fukuwarai, and try their hand at calligraphy.

“Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum Tour and Cherry-Blossom Viewing Party” Held in March.

After strolling around the museum and inspecting traditional Japanese buildings, both exterior and interior, participants enjoy a hanami picnic under the cherry blossoms and engage in exchange.

“Summer Festival Wearing a Yukata” Held in July.

Participating foreigners wear a yukata (summer kimono) and take part in Bon odori dancing in Higashi-Fushimi. Together with local residents, they enjoy the dancing and festival food sold at stalls.

“Historical Walking Tour and Exchange” Held in November.

Participants visit shrines, temples, ruins, parks, and other sites in the city to learn about history, customs, the Jomon period lifestyle, and other topics and to engage in exchange with one another.

How to volunteer

Volunteers who wish to participate from the planning stage are welcome throughout the year.

The planning and implementation of this project is limited to Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays, so even those who find it difficult to participate on weekdays can easily take part.

If you wish to participate only on the day of the event, we call for volunteers in the NIMIC Tsushin for each event.

In both cases, please inquire or contact us from the form shown below.
